NY Times calls for mandatory labeling of GE foods

new-york-times-iconIn a December 1 editorial written by its editorial board, The New York Times called for mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. In the piece entitled “Tell Consumers What They are Eating,” the newspaper’s editorial board cited the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s decision to not require labels on GE salmon, and added, “Congress should overturn that decision. Consumers deserve to know what they are eating.” The editorial also urged the U.S. Senate to rebuff any efforts to add a rider to an omnibus bill that would preempt states from requiring such labeling as passed by the House, and instead, allow states to adopt mandatory labeling laws if they so wish.
