The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended the comment period concerning the use of the marketing claim ‘natural’ on food labels to May 10. In a Federal Register notice Dec. 28, FDA said it was adding three months to the original Feb. 10 deadline “due to the complexity of this issue.” OTA has formed a task force in response to FDA’s request for information specific to organic. Its mandate is to assist OTA in developing comments to FDA on the use of the term ‘natural” and to protect and uphold the meaning of organic claims in the marketplace. To directly submit comments to the comment docket, visit Regulations.gov and type FDA-2014-N-1207 in the search box. OTA’s Gwendolyn Wyard is the contact person for the task force.
