Because there was no federal budget in place by 5 p.m. Eastern time last Thursday, the NOSB meeting scheduled for October 22-24 will not be held. It’s unclear whether the meeting will be rescheduled or whether the agenda will simply be postponed to the Spring 2014 meeting (scheduled for April 29-May 1 in San Antonio, TX). Plans won’t be finalized until the government reopens. OTA will provide members with additional clarification as we learn more. If you submitted comments to regulations.gov and they were processed before midnight on September 30, they are now posted and available to the public. If you submitted comments prior to the October 1 deadline, but those comments were not processed before the government shut down, those comments were received but will not be posted until after the government reopens. Our understanding is that comments WILL NOT need to be resubmitted for a rescheduled or postponed meeting. The agenda will likely remain the same, but if the meeting is rescheduled and is shorter than three days, some agenda items may be removed. Again, we will keep members updated as we learn more. Please contact Gwendolyn Wyard, OTA’s Regulatory Director for Organic Standards and Food Safety, if you have any questions or concerns.
