This past week, OTA’s Regulatory Director of Organic Standards and Food Safety Gwendolyn Wyard and OTA’s Senior Crops and Livestock Specialist Nathaniel Lewis attended a stakeholder workshop on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Discussed were next steps in the implementation of FSMA, with a focus on execution and compliance. FDA’s recently released operational strategy document highlighting its approach to implementation provided context for the workshop. Among the participants were key stakeholders from state agencies, industry, consumer groups, academia, and FDA. As the organic industry has many years of experience with preventive-based controls and regular inspection, FDA has expressed interest in collaborating with organic producers and processors for the successful implementation of FSMA. For more information, contact Gwendolyn Wyard.
