At NOSB’s meeting, Miles McEvoy, National Organic Program Deputy Administrator, covered numerous topics in his Introductory Remarks: NOSB assessment conducted by the Meridian Institute; NOSB under the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) and the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FAC); and NOSB procedures and operating guidelines. The presentation can be viewed online. Deputy McEvoy also provided an NOP Report covering NOP’s budget and accreditation activities; international trade; 2013 successes and key priorities for 2014; and a clarification that residue testing under the organic regulations includes testing for GMOs. The update reviewed the key organic provisions in the 2014 Farm Bill. In addition, USDA’s Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Policy Advisor Mark Lipson delivered a “Big Picture” presentation on organic policy, and discussed USDA’s efforts to encourage growth of the organic sector. Lipson also shared insight on improved avenues for prioritizing organic research. All of the introductory presentations from the spring NOSB meeting are available at www.ams.usda.gov/NOSBMeetings.
