Last week, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack testified regarding the President’s FY 2017 USDA budget request before the House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. During the hearing, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) asked what is being done to enhance research opportunities, and what USDA can do to better serve organic. Secretary Vilsack highlighted the organic research initiatives in the 2014 Farm Bill, which USDA is in the process of implementing. He also noted that USDA can better serve organic by finding ways to assist the transition of land from conventional to organic.
