Since 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued special harmonized codes (HS codes) to trace imports and exports of a number of organic products. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is currently working on another application to request additional HS codes for organic products, and is seeking input on which products toad to the list. To be eligible for an HS code, there have to be at least three market players actively trading, at least $1 million in sales of the good, and ease for Customs to identify (usually an organic certificate or TM-11). Please contact OTA’s International Trade Director Monique Marez no later than July 4 with any organic product or products you would like tracked, and any conventional codes you are currently using for which you would like an organic version (import or export).
