IFOAM Organics International and organic food distributor Nature & More have jointly introduced the True Cost of Food initiative promoting the idea that food prices should reflect the true cost, including hidden environmental and social costs. The transparency initiative showing consumers the true cost of organic vs. conventional products was launched this month at Berlin-based retailer BioCompany in Germany. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, the hidden costs of conventionally produced food amount to over $700 billion in environmental damage and $900 billion in social costs. Consumers can calculate the True Cost of Food for everyday products and read more about the initiative on the Nature & More website.
