Recently, Neil Young announced that he would discontinue sales of non-organic cotton t-shirts at his concerts and web stores. He encouraged his fans to also embrace organic cotton purchases citing the unsustainable pesticide, water, and fertilizer use in conventional cotton production. Read an article about Neil Young’s announcement in Rolling Stone Magazine. For OTA members interested in learning more about organic cotton production, consider joining OTA staff and the farmers of Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative (TOCMC) for their annual field day on September 30 in Lubbock, Texas. Tour organic cotton farms, a cotton gin, and other related sites in the south plains of Texas where a significant portion of domestic organic cotton is grown. For more information on the field day and organic cotton, contact Anita Morton with TOCMC or Nate Lewis, OTA’s Senior Crops and Livestock Specialist.
