This past week, Gwendolyn Wyard, OTA’s Regulatory Director of Organic Standards and Food Safety, and Chris Schreiner, OTA member and Executive Director of Oregon Tilth, participated in a Stahlbush Island Farms event with Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR 4th District). Stahlbush Island Farms, a long-time standing OTA member, hosted a walking tour of its Biogas Plant and Processing Facilities followed by a lunch meeting to discuss current agricultural topics impacting organic and sustainable agriculture. The tour and lunch were led by the owners Bill and Karla Chambers. Some key issues discussed included immigration and food security, food safety and the need to recognize existing food safety programs that exceed FDA’s proposed requirements, the need for skilled farm and food facility workers, and health care for seasonal workers. Congressman DeFazio highlighted the interplay between food production and energy, praising Stahlbush for sustainably cycling the flow of nutrients and energy throughout its farm and processing operations. DeFazio also recognized the importance of streamlining regulatory requirements to avoid duplicative rules while ensuring consumer safety and choice.
