The next National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting will be April 25-27 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. This meeting marks the first stage of the 2018 Sunset Review for five crop inputs and ten processing inputs. It is critical that NOSB hear from certified producers and handlers on whether the inputs scheduled to expire from the National List are consistent with and essential to organic production, or whether there are other effective natural or organic alternatives available. OTA is once again creating a survey system for collecting feedback from certified farms and processors that will be shared with NOSB. Other critical topics that will be discussed and/or voted on at the meeting include updating excluded method (GMO) terminology, data needed to support a seed purity standard, several crop, livestock and handling petitions, and annotation changes for procaine, lidocaine and parasiticides. The meeting agenda will be posted and the public comment period will open on March 8. OTA will help members engage in the comment process and we will be present at the meeting offering both written and oral comments. For more information, contact Gwendolyn Wyard or Nathaniel Lewis.
